As the dissertations title, it describes the protagonist as developing, in chronological episodes, from her late teens into her thirties. One ironic twist on the title comes early, in Jugs (1978), in which Rosemary undergoes breast-reduction surgery. In the last of these stories. Braintanning (1998). Rose, who a year after the 92 L.A. riots moved back to Montana, has returned to work on a bachelors degree begun two decades earlier, and observes herself as, in a sense, developing backwards: from a D-cup to a C-- from Montana roots back to Montana roots- and educationally, from Star Trek to Greek mythology, Paul Mazursky to Shakespeare, and from American English to the Latin roots of the natural world around her.
